MYCELIUM IS THE LARGEST ORGANISM ON THE PLANET. It is the collective root structure from which all mushrooms emerge. It lives three inches under the ground and can span for thousands of acres. Any of its threads can connect to the collective body at any point. almost any shit will do pulls language from mycelium studies to investigate the underground of political unrest, from its emergence as riots to the single moment of impact: a body in protest thrown to the ground by the cop. How can we mark the shifting boundary between the individual and the movement in the midst of a riot? It is in the continuous attempt to define these terms that we begin to articulate the utopia that is always already happening, three inches below the surface.

In this limited edition artist book, Spero attempts to create a rhizomatic form, one that embodies Lyn Hejinian’s idea of the open text, “which both acknowledges the vastness of the world and is formally differentiating.” Inspired by works such as Tom Philip's Humument, and Raymond Queneau's Cent mille milliards de poèmes, Spero's interrogation of book form encourages multiple axes of reading.

The four page spread of the gate fold form exponentially increases the potential for connectivity within almost any shit will do. Mirroring the structure of mycelial networks, this form requires that any content in the left spread must be able to connect to any content in the spread on the right. Through the act of turning the page, something begins to emerge.

Spero creates a poem within the poem, connecting phrases across stanzas, following associative lines of flight to form a horizontal axis of reading against the grain of the vertical. The result is a layered polyvocality and a lingering sense of what-could-still-be.
